THE Mitsiaki Takahashi was born like today in 1928 in Osaka of Japan. She got her degree Medicine from University of Osaka and joined Osaka University Microbial Disease Research Institute in 1959. After a study on measles and polio viruses, Dr. Takahashi received a research fellowship in 1963 at Baylor College of United States of America. It was during this period that his son developed a severe chickenpox attack, which focused his experience and energy on fighting the highly contagious disease.
THE Dr. Takahashi returned to Japan in 1965 and began cultivating live but attenuated chickenpox viruses in animal and human tissue. After just five years of development, his vaccine was ready for clinical trials. In 1974, o Dr. Takahashi had now developed the first vaccine to target the chickenpox virus. It was then rigorously researched with immunosuppressed patients and proved to be extremely effective. In 1986, the University of Osaka Microbial Disease Research Foundation started its release in Japan as the only chickenpox vaccine approved by him World Health Organization.
His vaccine Dr. Takahashi was soon used in more than 80 countries. In 1994, he was appointed its director Microbial Disease Study Group of the University of Osaka – a position he held until his retirement. Thanks to its innovations, millions of cases of chickenpox are prevented every year.
