Missing Brazilian woman may be among Hamas hostages, sources say

Brazilian diplomacy works with the hypothesis that Brazilian Karla Stelzer Mendes, 41 years old, is one of the Hamas hostages. The Rio native was last seen at the rave party that was the target of one of the attacks carried out by the radical Islamic group last Saturday.

Itamaraty has registered the disappearance of three Brazilians since then. Two had their deaths confirmed on Tuesday (10): Ranani Glazer and Bruna Valeanu. Karla has not yet been located.

According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as there is no information about other Brazilians missing in Israel, the chance that the woman from Rio was among the hostages cannot be ruled out.

“We are after two pieces of information, therefore. First, find out if it’s Karla. And if not, we will learn that other Brazilians are missing,” she told CNN a source of Brazilian diplomacy in direct contact with the groups being repatriated.

The warning about the possibility of having a Brazilian among the Hamas hostages increased after a statement by the spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, Jonathan Conricus.

“Dozens of Israelis were captured by Hamas and are in Gaza, many of them with dual nationality. So, this is not just a problem for Israel, it is something that concerns several countries around the world. We have Americans, English, French, Germans, Italians, Brazilians, Argentines and more”, said Conricus in a video published on social media.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recognizes the scale of what was published by the spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces. He reinforces, however, that he still does not have enough elements to confirm the information.

The Brazilian government is awaiting, for example, more details on how the list was validated to prove the nationality of the hostages.
