Ministry of the Environment bans Pintado fishing in Brazil

The Ministry of the Environment banned surubim fishing throughout Brazil, as of Monday (5), because the fish was included for the first time on the National List of Endangered Species, in the vulnerable category.

The surubim, also called painted, whose scientific name is “Pseudoplatystoma Corruscans”, — which is the species with prohibited fishing.

With this, in addition to fishing, marketing, transport, storage and even the practice of catch and release are also prohibited.

The inclusion of the fish in the list by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) followed an extensive analysis of international criteria.

This ban refers only to the species found in the basins of the São Francisco, Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay Rivers, it is common in other South American countries.

Species such as Pseudoplatystoma punctifer and Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum, also called surubins, are not on the prohibited list.

The surubim is of great interest for fishing, it is recognized for its size, which can reach one meter in length, it is famous for having a lot of meat, and being very tasty and with few bones.
