Ministry of Justice receives request from Italy for Robinho to serve time in Brazil

The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, declared, this Thursday (22), that the Ministry received a request from Italy for soccer player Robinho to serve his sentence for sexual violence in Brazil.

According to Dino, the case was accepted and sent to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) in compliance with the Federal Constitution. “The judicial process has started,” he explained.

The Italian government sent the request to the Brazilian authorities on February 17. The request also includes the arrest of the player’s friend, Ricardo Falco.

In October last year, the Italian court requested the extradition of the former player, convicted in the European country of rape. But the Brazilian constitution does not provide for the extradition of “born” Brazilians.

In January, however, Dino stated that Robinho could be arrested in Brazil, if the Italian government asked for it.

Striker Robinho, 37, received a sentence of 9 years in prison in December 2020, in the case that investigated sexual violence against a young woman of Albanian origin, in 2013.

On January 19 of this year, the player’s conviction was confirmed by the highest instance of Italian Justice. Almost a month later, on February 16, an international arrest warrant was issued.

The prosecution used audio recorded from a listening device installed in a car, which caught a conversation between Robinho and his friends, which made it possible to confirm the victim’s version of the collective rape.
