Ministry of Health plans to incorporate chikungunya vaccine in SUS

Following the approval of the chikungunya vaccine registration by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the Ministry of Health released on Monday (14), which plans to request the incorporation of the vaccine into SUS.

The request will be forwarded to the National Commission for Incorporation of Technologies in SUS (Conitec) to adopt the necessary measures.

The expectation is that if the measure is approved, it strengthens actions to combat the disease in Brazil.

“Every time the news of a new registered vaccine comes, it is good news for public health – especially when it involves two Fundamental SUS institutions: Anvisa and the Butantan Institute. Vaccination is always to defend life. Ensuring vaccination is the first step to save lives in our country,” Alexandre Padilha, said.

Chikungunya is an arbovirosis transmitted by the bite of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, also a vector of dengue and zika. The virus was introduced in Brazil in 2014 and currently all states record cases. Until April 14 this year, the country recorded 68,100 cases of the disease, with 56 confirmed deaths.
