Ministry of Education: Grant of 20 million euros and 400 new teaching positions at universities

The Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Mrs. Niki Kerameos, signed decisions with which an extraordinary grant of 20 million euros is awarded to the universities and 400 faculty members are distributed.

The extraordinary grant of each Institution concerns 50% the coverage of operating expenses and the remaining 50% the further support of the Institutions in terms of the implementation of their obligations arising from Law 4777/2021 to cover security and protection expenses and in particular for the implementation of controlled access systems, preparation of security plans, etc.

It is emphasized that this extraordinary funding, as well as the regular one, is now given on the basis of objective criteria proposed to the Ministry by the National Authority of Higher Education and they take into account e.g. the number of students, the number of departments, the geographical dispersion of the Foundation.

Regarding the 400 positions, the suggestion of the National Higher Education Authority to the Minister and which was accepted was: 65% of the 400 positions, ie 260 positions, to be distributed in proportion to the retirements of the academic year 2020-21.

The remaining 35% of the 400 seats, ie 140 seats, to be allocated according to objective criteria, as had been applied in the previous year.

In a statement, Ms. Kerameos noted that “We actively support our Institutions with financial and human resources, we support their operation and security. And we do it, not arbitrarily as it was before our government, but on the basis of objective and meritocratic criteria proposed by the National Higher Education Authority, with respect to the Institutions themselves and the taxpayer, so we favor the optimal use of available resources and transparency in of universities on the basis of objective criteria and applying it during the emergency “.
