Ministers arrive in Roraima after shooting attack on Yanomami indigenous people

A delegation of government ministers landed in Roraima this Monday (1st) to follow up on the case of the shooting attack on the Yanomami indigenous people on Saturday (29th).

The group, which includes ministers Nísia Trindade (Health), Marina Silva (Environment) and Sônia Guajajara (Indigenous Peoples), will meet with state authorities to discuss actions to combat illegal miners in the region. The delegation will participate in a press conference, at 5:30 pm (Brasília time), in the capital Boa Vista.

Representatives of the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai), the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI), as well as the Armed Forces and the Federal Police (PF) also participate in the delegation.

On Saturday (29), three victims were shot by alleged miners. One man died and two others are in serious condition, according to the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara.

Through social networks, the minister spoke. “It is with great regret that we learned of the shooting attack by miners against 3 Yanomami indigenous people, 1 died and the other 2 are being treated in a serious condition. An inter-ministerial delegation is on its way to Roraima to further reinforce the actions to disintrude criminals,” wrote Guajajara.

Later, the MJSP released a note informing that the portfolio will be represented by the National Secretary of Public Security, Tadeu Alencar, the Director of the National Force, Colonel Fernando Alencar and the Director of the Amazon and Environment of the Federal Police, Humberto Freire. “Two teams from the Federal Police are already in the indigenous community, where they heard witnesses and carried out investigations”, informs the note.

Also according to the ministry, “other diligences are still underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators of crimes, while the actions to remove invaders from indigenous lands continue within the scope of Operation Liberation”.

Attack

The three victims were shot by illegal prospectors working in the region, informed the president of the District Council for Yanomami and Ye’kwana Indigenous Health (Condisi-YY), Júnior Hekurari Yanomami.

The Roraima Health Secretariat reported that the two indigenous people who survived the attack arrived at the Roraima General Hospital, in Boa Vista, “stable, in room air, lucid and talking”. The folder clarifies that they have wounds in the abdomen and will be operated on by the unit’s general surgery team.

The minister also said that the MPI requested reinforcement from the Ministry of Justice for the Federal Police investigation into this case, which will be in charge of the Federal Police Superintendence in the state with support from the Directorate of Amazonia and Environment, in Brasília.

In a note, the PF informs that it has already “heard witnesses, carried out a crime scene investigation and is awaiting the preparation of the respective reports and reports for the continuation of the investigations”. According to the PF, other diligences “are still in progress to identify, locate and arrest the perpetrators of the crimes”.
