Militia operations “pervade” Rio de Janeiro, says prosecutor

In a press conference this Wednesday (1st) to detail the actions to combat the militia, prosecutor Fábio Côrrea, coordinator of the Special Action Group for the Repression of Organized Crime (Gaeco), of the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MP-RJ ), stated that the activities of these groups are already a reality in other Brazilian states, and not just in Rio de Janeiro.

“It is an organization whose practices permeate the state of Rio de Janeiro. Whether due to the intense flow of weapons or financial flow. These issues require uniform repression”, analyzes the prosecutor.

This Wednesday, the Federal Police (PF) and Gaeco carried out a new stage of the “Embryo” operation, to combat the militia in Rio de Janeiro. The objective of the action is to promote the “financial suffocation” of groups.

Throughout the morning, five suspects were arrested. According to investigations, one of them was part of the high-ranking militia in Rio das Pedras, in the west zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

On Tuesday afternoon (31), two militiamen were arrested in Barra da Tijuca, in the west zone, also as part of the “Embryo” operation. Among them, Taillon de Alcântara Barbosa, accused of leading the militia in Rio das Pedras.

At the beginning of October, drug traffickers murdered three doctors in a kiosk in Barra da Tijuca after one of the victims was mistaken for Taillon Barbosa, arrested yesterday. The next day, four bodies were found in two cars. According to investigations, the deaths were determined by a faction, after the criminals killed the doctors by mistake.

In total, the Rio de Janeiro Court issued 13 preventive arrest warrants and 15 search and seizure warrants in the capital, in Saquarema and in Angra dos Reis. In two days, ten people were arrested. Two active police officers and an army soldier were arrested in the act, accused of providing security for militia member Taillon.

“The Ministry of Justice has been helping us to increase our investigative capacity so that these operations today become more frequent. We are receiving reinforcement from specialized teams to dismantle criminal groups operating in the state of Rio de Janeiro”, said Leandro Almada, Superintendent of the PF in Rio de Janeiro.
