The mega-bill proposed by Javier Milei was approved by the Argentine Senate this Wednesday (12) after hours of debate among parliamentarians.
The vote reached a tie of 36 to 36 votes and the vice-president, Victoria Villaruel, granted the final vote to approve the project.
Now, the text returns to the Chamber, which had already approved a previous version of the project, as there were changes in the Senate.
It gives Milei special powers to govern by decree in several areas, allows the dissolution of public bodies and privatization of state-owned companies, changes labor laws and gives tax incentives to foreign companies that want to invest in the country.
Still, it was necessary for Milei to make several concessions for the text to move forward.
Confrontation between protesters and police
While senators debated the megaproject, there was a confrontation between protesters and police.
Cars and trash cans were set on fire and protesters threw bottles and stones at security forces.
The police used a truck with a water cannon, motorcycles and rubber bullets to try to disperse the protesters. At least 18 people were detained.
