Milei’s inauguration as president: ceremony time and how to watch it live

The countdown advances to the inauguration of Javier Milei as president of Argentina this Sunday, December 10th. The current president, Alberto Fernández, will hand over command to the libertarian in an inauguration ceremony that will be held at the national Congress.

Milei published an image of the inauguration on her X account (formerly Twitter), calling on Argentines to attend Congress this Sunday with the country’s flag. The publication was accompanied by the caption “Long live freedom, man**”.

What will the ceremony be like?

The leader of La Libertad Avanza will headline the event together with his running mate, Victoria Villarruel. Former Argentine foreign minister Jorge Faurie worked with the Fernández government in developing the Inauguration Day program.

According to article 93 of the National Constitution, “upon taking office, the president and vice-president will take an oath, in the hands of the president of the Senate and before the Congress meeting in the Assembly, respecting their religious beliefs, to: act with loyalty and patriotism the position of president (or vice-president) of the Argentine Nation”.

On this occasion, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will be in charge of presiding over the inauguration of the Legislative Assembly parliament in her capacity as vice-president of the Senate.

Article 141 of the document establishes that “on the portico of the Government House, the president will be received by the head of the Military House, the director of ceremonies and an aide-de-camp of the outgoing president, who will greet him.” They will accompany you to the White Room (stage in front of the Bust of the Republic).”

The outgoing president then hands over to his successor the presidential insignia (command baton and presidential sash) which are placed on the table on the dais, in accordance with article 142.

Fernández will say goodbye to Milei and leave the White Room together with his former ministers. He will be accompanied to the portico of the Government House by the new head of the Military House, the ceremonial director and an aide-de-camp of the president.

In the afternoon, Milei will swear an oath to the ministers of his cabinet to perform their corresponding functions before the Chief Notary of the Government.

Milei will not make any speech in front of lawmakers, but will do so on the steps of the building in front of followers. Once the ceremony in Congress is over, Milei will travel to the Government House in a convertible along Avenida de Mayo, according to the Télam news agency.
