Milei won in the city of Tigre, Sergio Massa’s electoral home

Javier Milei, elected president of Argentina this Sunday (19), beat Economy Minister and government candidate for President Sergio Massa in the city of Tigre, in the province of Buenos Aires, where the Peronist became mayor.

At around 11:35 pm, with 99.28% of the ballot boxes counted across the country, Milei appeared with 52.05% of the valid votes in Tigre, while Massa had only 47.94%.

Sergio Massa was elected mayor of Tigre in 2007, a position he held until 2009, when he took leave to be head of government for then president Cristina Kirchner. After a year, the Peronist returned to the city council and, in 2011, was re-elected.

There, he was elected national deputy and his wife, Malena Galmarini, was a councilor and secretary of Health Policy between 2008 and 2019. In the 2023 elections, Malena was a pre-candidate for mayor of the city and was defeated in the primaries.

Massa was defeated by Milei in 20 of the 23 Argentine provinces. The Peronist was victorious only in Buenos Aires (50.73%), Santigo del Estero (68.41%) and Formosa (56.5%).

Economist Javier Milei, 53 years old, was elected president of Argentina this Sunday.

In the second round, he beat Massa, who had won the first round on October 22.

At 9:21 pm, with 97.4% of the votes counted, Milei had 55.76% of the votes against 44.23% for Massa, who admitted defeat even before the first partial was announced.

Milei will take office on December 10th.

Second place in the first round, Milei managed to reverse the situation this Sunday. A comeback in the second round was a feat that had only been achieved in 2015 by Mauricio Macri.
