The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, called the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, a “murderous communist”, triggering a diplomatic crisis between the countries.
In a statement, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested this Friday (26) against the Argentine's “disrespectful and irresponsible” statements and called its ambassador Camilo Romero for consultations “immediately”.
Milei's statements were given to journalist Patricia Janiot, a famous Colombian-American presenter, this Thursday (25). In the interview, Milei defined Petro as a “murderous communist who is sinking Colombia, the Chilean Gabriel Boric as “someone who has incorrect ideas” and the president of El Salvador Nayib Bukele as “someone who despite adversity managed to carry out his government program”.
“The Colombian government energetically rejects this declaration, which undermines the honor of the first president, who was elected in a democratic and legitimate way. President Milei's words ignore and violate the deep ties of friendship, understanding and cooperation that have historically united Colombia and Argentina”, says the statement of protest from the Colombian Foreign Ministry.
The text also says that as a consequence of the circumstances created by Milei's words, the Colombian government “immediately” calls its ambassador Camilo Romero, Colombia's representative in Argentina, for consultations.
In the name of the Government of Colombia, I present my most energetic protest for the irresponsible and irresponsible declarations of the President of the Argentine Republic, Señor Javier Milei, against the President @petrogustavoduring the development of an interview with a journalist…
