Rabat decided to postpone the holding of a meeting in the Moroccan capital with the participation of the US, the Israel and the Arab countries with which the Jewish state has signed peace agreements, known as “Covenants of Abraham“, the Moroccan foreign minister announced today, amid the growing violence in West Bank.
According to Israeli and Moroccan media, the second “Synod of the Negev” it was supposed to take place in Morocco in mid-July, having already been postponed to the spring. This annual meeting brings together the foreign ministers of the countries that signed the “Abraham Accords”.
As of late 2020, Israel has been normalizing relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan under the Abraham Accords, which were concluded under US auspices.
“Efforts were made to hold the meeting in the summer. Unfortunately, there is a political environment that cannot allow this meeting to bring the expected results”, stressed the head of Moroccan diplomacy during a press conference.
He was referring to the situation in the occupied West Bank, where the cycle of violence has claimed the lives of around 20 people, mostly Palestinians, in recent days.
The Moroccan Foreign Minister expressed his regret for “anything provocative and one-sided (…), for any decision taken by the extremists on both sides and especially on the Israeli side, condemning “the recent Israeli attack on the city of Jenin”.
“Morocco also rejects the Israeli government’s recent decision to expand settlement activity in the West Bank,” which “endangers the chances of peace in the region”according to Burita.
However, according to the Athens News Agency, he expressed the hope that the “Synod of the Negev” “could be held at the beginning of the school year here in Morocco” in a more “favorable” environment, without specifying a date.
Israel’s foreign ministry declined to comment on Rabat’s decision. Yair Lapid, Israel’s former foreign minister and prime minister who was the architect of the summit when he was in power last year, stressed that the current Israeli government is headed “from failure to failure”.
“This is not how foreign policy should be conducted,” said Lapid, who now leads the opposition against the nationalist-religious government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

After the normalization of their relations, the Morocco and Israel have focused on accelerating their cooperation, mainly in the military, security, trade and tourism sectors.
Since the end of May, three Israeli ministers as well as the speaker of parliament, the national security adviser and soldiers from an elite infantry unit have, for the first time, visited Morocco.
This approach is not widely accepted in Moroccan society, which does not forget the Palestinian cause. Especially after the rise of ultra-nationalist and anti-Arab parties to power in Israel.
