Microsoft bans cryptocurrency mining through its online services

Software and cloud giant Microsoft has included a ban on cryptocurrency mining in an update to its Universal Licensing Terms for Online Services that came into effect on December 1st.

This document applies to any “Microsoft-hosted service to which a customer subscribes under a Microsoft Volume Licensing Agreement.” The section titled “Acceptable Use Policy” states:

“Neither the client, nor those accessing the web service through the client, may use the web service to mine cryptocurrency without Microsoft’s prior written permission.”

Microsoft has published this decision on the “Summary of Changes” page and in a partner newsletter titled “Important Actions Partners Should Take to Protect the Partner Ecosystem.” The document says:

“The Acceptable Use Policy has been updated to prohibit cryptocurrency mining on all Microsoft online services unless Microsoft provides written prior approval. We suggest obtaining written pre-approval from Microsoft before using Microsoft Online Services to mine cryptocurrencies, regardless of the subscription term.”

Microsoft has not commented on why the company has imposed the ban, nor under what circumstances, if any, it will issue written permission to mine cryptocurrency.

In November, German hosting company Hetzner shut down more than 1,000 Solana network validators, resulting in over 20% of all staking transactions being blocked. Earlier, the cloud service provider stated that its terms of service prohibit not only mining, but also staking of all crypto assets, including ether.
