Michel: Strengthening Europe’s security and stability at the heart of the Summit

Enhancing security and stability on the European continent will be the focus of the Summit to be held on 23 and 24 June in Brussels.

“With the war back in Europe, we have taken unprecedented action, highlighting the geopolitical influence of the EU. Now we need to take further steps to enhance the security and stability of our continent. This will be the focus of our European Council meeting on “June 23-24,” said Charles Michel in a letter of invitation to European leaders.

At the same time, the President of the European Council notes that he will invite the “27” to grant candidate status for membership in Ukraine and Moldova.

“We will continue to provide strong humanitarian, military and financial support to Ukraine,” he said, stressing the importance of the Western Balkans.

“The Western Balkans are important for the EU and the EU is important for the Western Balkans. We must therefore renew the enlargement process and promote the integration of our partners from the Western Balkans. We will meet with them before the formal European Council.” points out Charles Michel.

“Peace, security and prosperity in a rule-based international order are values ​​that the EU shares with other European partners. The idea of ​​a European political community was presented to promote political dialogue and cooperation. We will participate in a strategic discussion on how to strengthen our relations to address issues of common interest “.

The President of the European Council also focuses on the food crisis. In particular, he said: “The effects of the war are being felt far beyond our region. Russia is equipping food supplies, stealing grain, blocking ports and turning Ukrainian agricultural land into battlefields. This is affecting many countries, especially Africa, at risk. “From hunger, political and social instability. Based on our efforts to help Ukraine export its grain, we will discuss further measures to address these issues.”

“European citizens took part in the Conference on the Future of Europe and made proposals aimed at improving the functioning of our Union. It will need proper monitoring,” he added.

“The current situation requires an in-depth discussion at our Euro Summit, in the presence of the President of the European Central Bank and the President of the Eurogroup. We also need to determine how we want to proceed with the Banking Union. and the Hellenic Capital Markets Association “.

Finally, in the letter of invitation, the President of the European Council states that on Thursday, 23 June at 10.30 (Greece) the meeting with the leaders of the Western Balkans begins and at 16.00 (Greece) the meeting of the European Council.
