Michel Barnier: I pledge to promote “respect and unity” in the country

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier tonight pledged to work with “those of good faith” to promote respect and unity in the politically divided country after months of political turmoil. “The French (…) today need and expressed their need for respect, unity and appeasement,” Barnier said in his first statements as prime minister, in the Matignon courtyard, next to his predecessor, Gabriel Attal. In the morning, President Emmanuel Macron appointed Barnier, the former EU Brexit negotiator, as prime minister and tasked him with uniting France and ending the political paralysis after the general election. Barnier said he wanted to “respond to the challenges, the anger, the suffering” of the French and promised to move forward with “changes and ruptures”.
