Miami Mayor Calls for Crypto Enthusiast to be Elected President of the United States

The head of the Miami mayor’s office criticized the US administration’s policy towards bitcoin and spoke about the concept of “Bitcoin America 2024”.

Francis Suarez, at a conference hosted by Bitmain dedicated to cryptocurrency mining, called on the audience to “come out and elect the next President of the United States in 2024 to support Bitcoin.” And then he joked that perhaps he could become such a candidate:

“I thought: how can I grow up? And I answered myself that I can announce: I am running … no, not this year.

Miami’s mayor said he wants to articulate a “cryptocurrency vision for the country.” He reads that bitcoin supporters should be elected to various positions in government bodies, because these people will be able to create a favorable regulatory climate. The politician called for the integration of bitcoins “into every area of human life, including the use of cryptocurrency as a means of payment for the daily purchase of goods and services.”

Suarez’s ambitions extend beyond just introducing the traditional use of bitcoin into the economy. He wants society to work together to “unleash the macro power of Bitcoin.” Blockchain is needed, the mayor argues, to break the cycle of poverty by decoupling it from some federal monetary policies.

“Bitcoin has the ability to democratize and create wealth for the unbanked, the poor in our community who are being decimated by inflation and rampant government spending,” Suarez said.

The mayor of Miami criticized the attitude of President Joseph Biden towards cryptocurrencies. The position of the US administration in relation to the crypto industry, Suarez argues, indicates that the authorities perceive cryptocurrencies mainly as a tool for tax evasion, money laundering, drug trafficking and terrorist financing, which is fundamentally wrong.

Suarez noted that Biden has never openly spoken about bitcoin in public. His administration is largely indifferent and seems to have completely misunderstood what the Bitcoin network is. Obviously, the Biden administration does not distinguish bitcoin from altcoins, which betrays a disregard for any fundamental understanding of the currency, the politician summed up his speech.

Recall that Miami became the first municipality in South Florida to accept contributions to the city’s treasury in its own MiamiCoin cryptocurrency. According to the mayor, one day contributions can replace taxes. In 2021, he stated that the city’s cryptocurrency brought $7 million to the city’s budget.
