MI6 spy claims he was captured by China

The Chinese authorities announced today that the director of a foreign consultancy has been charged with spying for Britain's MI6 intelligence agency.

Beijing's Ministry of Public Security said via WeChat that London's spy agency, commonly known as MI6 (a.k.a. military intelligence/sector six), used a foreign national, surnamed Huang, to gain “relations cooperation in the field of (gathering) information'.

According to the same source, MI6 “developed” (the relationship with) Huang Mumu in 2015.

The nationality of this person, head of a consulting company, is not specified, nor is the name of the company given. He reportedly “entered China repeatedly with instructions to use his public profile as a cover to gather information about China on behalf of Britain' and to 'find other people whom MI6 could contact'.

He allegedly sent 17 reports — including some containing Chinese state secrets — to MI6 before he was caught, according to the same source.

The ministry said the investigation “quickly led to the discovery of evidence that Huang was engaged in espionage activity” and that “coercive measures were taken” against him, a term that usually means someone has been taken into custody.

When contacted for comment by AFP, the Foreign Office did not immediately respond.

For months, London and Beijing have traded accusations of espionage.

The British government has warned that Chinese spies are increasingly targeting public officials. An investigator in the British Parliament recently denied that he was spying for the Chinese intelligence service.

Last year, China made a series of raids on foreign multinational consulting firms.

In May, Beijing announced it had searched the offices of US consultancy Capvision to protect China's “national security interests”.

In April, Chinese authorities questioned staff at the Shanghai branch of another American consulting firm, Bain.
