Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday that her government will send a letter to Google after the company reports that it would change the name of Mexico’s Gulf to Google Maps users in the United States.
The US government announced on Friday that it had officially changed the name of Mexico’s Gulf to America’s Gulf-Americans often refer to the United States as “America.”
On Monday (27), Google said that when official names vary between countries, users see the official name where they are.
Sheinbaum pondered that changes in international waterways should be approved by international organizations and not unilaterally countries.
“To change the name of an international sea, it is not a country that changes it; It’s a global organization, ”said the Mexican leader during a press conference.
President of Mexico does not believe in US tariffs
Sheinbaum also stressed that he does not believe that the US will impose fees on February 1 against Mexico after the White House has reinforced Trump’s promise for this.
Shortly after taking office last week, the Republican established February 1 as a deadline to impose 25% rates on imports in Mexico and Canada, unless countries take action to stop the flows of irregular and Fentanil immigrants to USA.
Claudia Sheinbaum also commented on the cancellation of the exceptional summit of CELAC (Latin American and Caribbean Community) convened by Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Honduran President Xiomara Castro.
The meeting would aim to coordinate a response from Latin American political leaders to Trump’s threats.
On Tuesday night (28), Castro issued a statement announcing the cancellation of the meeting “due to lack of consensus”, highlighting the current difficulties for state leaders to organize themselves in response to the US President.
