Meta Council considers recommending sensitive content warnings

Meta’s supervisory board said on Thursday (20) that starting this month it may decide to apply warnings on screens, marking content as “disturbing” or “sensitive”.

The council, which can now review user appeals to remove content, said it could make binding decisions to enforce a warning screen when “leaving or restoring eligible content,” including photos and videos.

In its quarterly transparency report, the board said it received 347,000 appeals from Facebook and Instagram users worldwide during the second quarter.

“Since we started accepting orders two years ago, we have received nearly two million appeals from users,” the report said. “This demonstrates the continued demand from users to appeal Meta’s content moderation decisions to an independent body.”

The council, which includes academics, legal experts and lawyers, was created by the company to decide on content moderation features and advise on site policies.

Last month, the council opposed the removal of a newspaper story about the Taliban on Facebook, which it considered positive because it supported users’ freedom of expression.
