Mercedes-Benz will supply energy through offshore wind from 2027

Mercedes-Benz has struck a preliminary deal with an offshore wind energy supplier to supply electricity equivalent to 25% of its demand in Germany from 2027, a spokesman for the automaker said on Monday.

The energy supplier, which the person declined to name, will reserve power for Mercedes-Benz from an offshore wind farm under construction in the Baltic Sea.

The automaker also plans to build a wind farm in the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony by 2025, capable of producing 100 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to more than 15% of the automaker’s annual demand in Germany.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and rising gas prices have heightened the urgency for German industry, which consumes another 30% of the country’s energy, to move away from fossil fuels, as tools like carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates do not are more sufficient to meet the new goal of energy independence.
