Melting glacier in Alps reveals body of climber who disappeared 22 years ago

A mountain guide discovered days ago in glacier of Austria a body that, as the police announced today, probably belongs to a 37-year-old Austrian mountaineer who disappeared 22 years ago. The ice melting record recorded by scientists in Alpsas a result of global warming, is increasingly bringing to light the remains of people who disappeared decades ago.

The body was found on August 18 on the Slatenkes Glacier in Tyrol, at an altitude of about 2,900 meters, local police said in a statement. A backpack, which contained a bank card and a driver’s license, were found nearby, which led investigators to the conclusion that this is the 37-year-old who had disappeared in 2001.

DNA samples will be analyzed to confirm the evidence. The results are awaited “within a few weeks” according to the Athens News Agency. By the end of June, other human remains had been found on the same glacier, which recorded a significant reduction (89.5 meters) in 2021/22, according to the annual report of the Austrian Alpine Club.

As the glaciers melt and shrink, the remains of other climbers lost decades ago have also been found in recent years. In neighboring Switzerland, the remains of a 38-year-old German mountaineer, who had disappeared in 1986, they were found in July on the Teodul glacier.

In 2015, the remains of two Japanese men who were killed on the Matterhorn during a blizzard in 1970 were found.
