Meeting of Al. Tsipras with the chairman of the Congress Foreign Affairs Committee

The president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, met with a delegation from the US House of Representatives, led by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Gregory Weldon Meeks.

According to a related announcement, in this context they discussed Greek-American relations, global developments following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the escalation of Turkish aggression in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Mr. Tsipras expressed the support of SYRIZA-PS in the promotion of the Strategic Dialogue on Greek-American relations with special emphasis on the economy and energy.

At the same time, he underlined the need for the strategic-defense relations of the two countries to develop on a mutually beneficial basis, with tangible commitments for the defense of Greece.

Alexis Tsipras thanked the members of Congress who supported the Greek positions and especially the EastMed Act which was promoted in 2018. He expressed, however, the strong discomfort of the Greek people for the attitude of the US in relation to the Eastmed pipeline, the non condemnation of overflights and violations of Greek airspace and the sale and modernization of F16 in Turkey.

He emphasized that SYRIZA-PS supports any initiative of the Congress and the Senate, to change the American policy in these areas and that the solution cannot be a new costly arms race between Greece and Turkey. He also underlined that Turkey’s integration into the new Western security and energy architecture without the condition of respect for international law will have adverse regional consequences.

The meeting was attended by the head of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos, the deputy head of Defense Giorgos Tsipras and the diplomatic adviser of the president of SYRIZA-PS, Vangelis Kalpadakis.
