Mayors of Brazilian cities on the border with Venezuela and Guyana report seizure

Mayors of cities in Roraima, located on Brazil’s border with Venezuela and Guyana, monitor the tension between neighboring countries and report their apprehension about the possibility of a conflict in South America.

The significant movement of armored vehicles and military personnel is recorded in the municipality of Pacaraima, a city north of Roraima, which is on the border with Venezuela. The Army is also positioned at strategic points in Uiramutã, another city next to the neighboring country. In Bonfim, there is no action by the armed forces.

The mayor of Pacaraima, Juliano Torquato (Republicans) informed the CNN that the federal authorities do not keep the local legislative and executive powers informed about the actions, which according to him causes apprehension in management and people.

“We are apprehensive because the number of military personnel and equipment never seen before in Pacaraima is always increasing and we are worried. We are outraged by the lack of information to the very power that represents the people and population of Pacaraima”, complained Torquato.

According to the mayor, the movement of civilians remains calm on the Brazilian side and on the Venezuelan side they have not seen any strange movements.

On the border with Guyana, the mayor of Bonfim, Joner Chagas (Republicans), published a video of the route to cross the border with the neighboring country. In the images taken this Friday (8), it shows the absence of military personnel in the region and the tranquility of commerce in the border city.

Despite the tension with Venezuela over the Essequibo region, Joner stated that the dispute between the countries has not affected movement in the city of Lethem, in Guyana.

“The border is open, businesses are operating and traffic continues to flow. Both Venezuelans and Guyanese are our brothers. We don’t want conflict. I hope that this situation will be resolved peacefully, as quickly as possible,” he said in the recording.

However, Chagas also demonstrated tension in the event of a possible armed conflict. “Yes, there is concern about the whole issue involving the dispute over Essequibo, but life is going on normally”, he concluded.

A CNN awaits a position from the Ministry of Defense regarding the considerations made by municipal managers.
