Mayor of Rio announces closure of the Acari fair, known as “robatudo”

The mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes announced, this Monday (22), through social media, that he will ban the Acari fair, in the North Zone of the city. The fair has been operating since the 1970s as a popular shopping spot on the banks of the train line, near Morro da Pedreira.

The fair traditionally takes place on Sundays on Av. Pastor Martin Luther King Jr. and has earned the nicknames “robatudo” and “robauto”, for selling products from stolen cargo at prices well below market prices. It is possible, for example, to find an air conditioner that is sold in stores for around R$2,300 and is sold for R$1,000 at the fair. Clothing from department stores is also sold on the label, but at half price. Offers are announced online through humorous videos.

The mayor claims that the products originate from organized crime. A decree must be published in the Municipality's official gazette this Tuesday (23) prohibiting the event from taking place.

“After a conversation this weekend with the governor @claudiocastroRJ, I will publish tomorrow in the Official Gazette of the Municipality a decree prohibiting the operation of the Acari Fair on any day of the week. It is not acceptable for a “fair” full of products of unknown origin to operate normally in the city. The delegated secretary @BrennoCarnevale is already instructed to coordinate with the police forces to prevent the installation of the aforementioned fair. It’s worth remembering that the origin of these products is entirely from organized crime”, wrote the mayor.

A CNN contacted the Municipal Public Order Secretariat, the Military Police and the Civil Police and awaits their position on the matter.
