Mauro Vieira is chosen by Lula to represent Brazil at a meeting in Egypt about the war

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, will represent Brazil at the meeting called by Egypt to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday (21).

There was the possibility of the Brazilian government sending another representative, but, at the request of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the country will be represented by the minister himself. The information was confirmed to CNN by Itamaraty sources.

The event was called amid the escalation of the conflict between Hamas and Israel. The effort is in an attempt to prevent the fighting from spreading to the Middle East. In addition to Brazil and Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and Qatar are also expected to participate.

This Tuesday (18), the Minister of Foreign Relations was in the Federal Senate, where he provided clarifications on the situation in Israel and Brazil’s actions. Afterwards, he embarked for New York to negotiate a new proposal at the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

“It must be clear that this is not a Brazilian draft resolution, but a project articulated by Brazil in its capacity as president of the Security Council, based on a series of contacts and consultations in New York, and in the main capitals of the world, in search of a minimum common denominator between disparate interests”, he said in a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
