Matthew Perry dies: remember iconic phrases and moments from Chandler Bing in “Friends”

Chandler Bing, the iconic “Friends” character played by actor Matthew Perry, who died at age 54, left many memorable moments and iconic phrases throughout the series.

Chandler was known for using humor as a tool in all situations, and this created many scenes that were recorded in those who followed the series closely.

A CNN Below we have separated some of Chandler’s best moments.

When Chandler travels to Yemen to avoid breaking up with Janice

In order not to have to break up with his girlfriend Janice (Maggie Wheeler), something that Chandler found very difficult (having to end a relationship), he tells her that, because of his work, he must be transferred to another country.

Janice seems excited about the idea and, to discourage her, Chandler tells her that the transfer is to Yemen. As she refuses to leave him until it’s time to leave, he tells her he will be traveling the next day.

Still, he can’t escape the situation and Janice helps him pack his bags and accompanies him to the airport. Just when he thinks he’s finally achieved his goal, his girlfriend tells him she won’t leave until she sees the plane take off.

So Chandler goes to the counter and pretends to buy a ticket to Yemen. The conversation with the airline saleswoman is priceless. The girl doesn’t hesitate and Chandler is forced to buy a ticket to Yemen.

The moment culminates in another touch of humor, with Chandler boarding the plane and asking a stranger, “When we get to Yemen, can I stay with you?”

When Monica is burned by a jellyfish

Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Monica (Courtney Cox) and Chandler (Perry) are at the beach during a trip that the six friends from the series take to Phoebe’s (Lisa Kudrow) grandmother’s house.

Monica is “burned” by a jellyfish. When they return home, none of the three want to talk about what happened. Back in New York, they decide to tell the others what happened.

In a tragicomic tone, the three tell how, after Joey suffered from “stage fright”, Chandler offered to urinate on Monica’s leg, something they had seen on the Discovery Channel as a way to alleviate the pain from jellyfish burns.

When it’s Chandler’s turn to tell his part, in his classic ironic tone, he remembers Joey rushing him saying, “Do it now, do it.”

“Sometimes late at night I can still hear the screams,” says Chandler. “That’s because sometimes I do it through the wall”, concludes Joey (in the series, the two live in the same apartment).

When Chandler gets drunk and kisses Joey’s sister

After a night of drinking, Chandler remembers kissing one of Joey’s sisters. The problem is he doesn’t remember which one.

When Joey confronts him about whether he was just joking or whether he was serious about “Mary Angela,” Chandler at least gets a name.

He says that his affair with Mary Angela is serious and this buys him time to see how to get out of trouble. First, he tries to solve the problem with a letter to Joey’s sister, which he asks Ross (David Schwimmer) to read.

When Joey finds out, he plans, with the usual irony, to “be in Cuba.” But Ross suggests that he go to the house where the sisters live and talk to her.

He ends up sitting at the table with Joey, his sisters, and his grandmother. His gestures and comments are truly hilarious.

Finally, another of Joey’s sisters chases him when he goes to the bathroom, he mistakes her for Mary Angela, but the real kissing girl appears and the final scene with Chandler confronting all the Tribbiani brothers is without a doubt one of the funniest moments in the series .

When Chandler sleeps on the job and agrees to transfer to Tulsa

After spending a sleepless night worrying about a work meeting the next day, Chandler arrives for work and falls asleep when his boss asks who wants to take over the Tulsa offices.

Chandler says he agrees, but doesn’t really understand what he’s agreeing to until it’s too late to back out.

When he tells Mônica, with whom he was already a couple at that point in the series, she tells him to fix it.

His conversation with his boss is classic Chandler: the more he tries to fix it, the worse the situation gets and he finally has to accept the transfer.

The marriage proposal

A classic man afraid of commitment, no one expected Chandler to get married. But love with Mônica reaches the unexpected. After buying the ring – in a funny scene with Phoebe – he tries to propose to Monica in a restaurant, but Richard (Tom Selleck), his old love, appears and ruins the moment.

When they return home, all the friends want to see Monica’s hands and Chandler worries that the surprise has been ruined.

So he tries to deceive her to the point of making her think that the relationship has no future. Everything that happens next became a milestone in the series and ends with one of the most romantic scenes in the sitcom: the moment when Monica finally surprises Chandler with the marriage proposal.
