The new production by Gary Goetzman, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks about World War II has arrived on Apple TV+. “Mestres do Ar”, which follows the line adopted by the trio in hits such as “Irmãos de Guerra” and “O Pacifico” premieres this Friday (26).
The plot is based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller, was adapted by John Orloff and tells the real story of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States during the attacks on Hitler's Germany.
The production shows with a magnifying glass the saga of North American soldiers who face the cold, lack of oxygen, high temperatures and the considerable altitudes at which military planes flew in World War II.
A CNN Gary Goetzman confessed that the big challenge of putting a series like “Air Masters” on hold was dealing with the delays imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and making the scenes in which multiple planes fly in the sky at the same time seem very real.
“The biggest challenge was definitely making a show that had so many battles and planes and people in the air, making it feel real, something really tactile and, hopefully, putting you in the action. Technically, it was the most difficult part”, explained the executive producer.
According to Goetzman, the series has, in total, 3,200 CGIs, that is, computer-generated images. He also spoke to CNN about what it was like portraying Nazi horrors in the series.
The cast includes names like Austin Butler, from “Elvis”, Barry Keoghan, from “Saltburn”, Raff Law, son of Jude Law, and Callum Turner, from the “Fantastic Beasts” saga.
A CNN , the cast talked about the importance of producing audiovisual content about the Second World War at a time when humanity is experiencing two wars: Israel's war against the radical Islamic group Hamas; and of Russia against Ukraine.
Although the main role seems to lie with Butler and Turner, “Masters of the Air” is a story narrated by Lieutenant Colonel Harry Crosby, who was a navigator in the 100th Bombardment Group, played by Anthony Boyle.
The American actor told CNN that it was a “true privilege and a true honor” to lead the narrative with his voice.
“It was a big responsibility,” said Boyle. “I feel like Crosby was the perfect person to do this.”
