The exhibition in Milan at Palazzo Reale Mario Dondero. Freedom and commitment is the largest anthology ever made on the work of the photojournalist known for the portraits of Pier Paolo Pasolini, Laura Betti, Maria Callas, Yves Montand, Fidel Castro and the shots of so much humanity scattered around the world that he was particularly fond of. A tribute to an artist, my father, who for the first time in Italy is told in an exhaustive way.
In the Apartment of the Prince they are exposed almost one hundred black and white photos, chosen with the fresh and captivating curation of Raffaella Pernaprofessor of Contemporary Art History at the La Sapienza University of Rome and the direction of Silvana Editoriale, with the contribution of the Bergamo gallery of Arialdo Ceribelli.
There are the most famous photos such as the man who wanted to reach the moon taken in Accettura, in Basilicata, in 1993, or the Cuban kids diving into the sea, and others less known, even unpublished, thanks to the work of the Altidona Archive, in the Marche region, where Mario lived in the last years of his life.
There is also a short film by photographer Giacomo Bretzel entitled Mario sings it to you and tells it to you shot in a totally new family situation and a selection of objects, such as his Leica (technical partner) and an honorary degree from the Brera Academy. And from Palazzo Reale, the exhibition continues on Autoguidovie buses throughout Lombardy, in a sort of conceptual extension where you can see photos of Dondero while travelling, a tribute to his habit of traveling by bus «because that’s how you could talk with the people”.
Today we know Mario like this, at Palazzo Reale, in the house of the Milanese. From June 21st to September 6th.
