Mariah Carey, Stray Kids and tribute to Whitney: see the AMA performances

The American Music Awards (AMA), one of the main music awards in the United States, held a special edition on Sunday (6) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first ceremony, which took place in 1974. The night broke a two-year hiatus. years without awards being given, since the last AMA took place in 2022 and the next one will only be in 2025.

The celebration delved into the history of the award and tried to recall the main moments of North American pop music. This was the first time that the AMA was broadcast by the North American broadcaster CBS, which, from 2025, will be responsible for the event.

The festive night featured a Mariah Carey performance complete with live vocals, a collaboration between K-pop band Stray Kids and a tribute to the memory of Whitney Houston. There were also performances by British revelation Raye, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Chaka Khan and the band Green Day.

Mariah Carey — “We Belong Together” and “Don’t Forget About Us”

Following the tone of her Las Vegas residency, “The Celebration of Mimi”, the singer sang two of the main hits from the album “The Emancipation of Mimi”, which turns twenty in 2005, the year in which she won her last AMA. On that occasion, Mariah took home the trophy for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist; In total, the North American has 10 victories in the history of the award.

Brad Paisley — “Kiss an Angel Good Morning’” and “Truck Still Works”

Singer Brad Paisley represented country and paid tribute to Charley Pride by singing “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’”. Afterwards, he also presented “Truck Still Works”, his new single.

Jennifer Hudson – “I Loves You Porgy” and “I Will Always Love You”

Actress and singer Jennifer Hudson was tasked with paying tribute to Whitney Houston, a phenomenon in the history of the awards show who took home, in total, 22 trophies while she was alive. She recreated one of the most iconic performances in AMA history, when the “The Bodyguard” star sang “I Loves You Porgy” and “I Will Always Love You” in 1994.

Chaka Khan and Sheila E — “I’m Every Woman”

Star Chaka Khan teamed up with percussionist Sheila E to perform “I’m Every Woman,” which is one of her biggest hits. The performance took place right after a tribute to a series of women who made history at the awards, such as Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Tina Turner and Lady Gaga.

Raye — “It’s A Man’s World”

British singer Raye, who shined at this year’s Brit Awards, sang “It’s A Man’s World”, which became a classic in the voice of James Brown.

Stray Kids — “Bye Bye Bye” and “Chk Chk Boom”

The K-pop band opened their performance with a tribute to the North American boy band N’Sync singing “Bye Bye Bye” and, afterwards, brought their hit “Chk Chk Boom”.

Green Day — “Dilemma”

Representing rock, the band Green Day sang “Dilemma”, the third single from their new album, “Saviors”.

Nyle Rodgers & Chic — “Le Freak” and “Get Lucky”

The American singer took to the awards stage to bring two of his biggest hits: “Le Freak”, which he released when he was still forming Chic, and “Get Lucky”, which won the world with Daft Punk.
