Mare Fuori 3, the first two episodes in preview: here’s how they are

to us of Vanity Fair like to recognize a quality product when we see one, which is why the hype that accompanied Sea Out in the last year and a half it hasn’t surprised us, because we knew it was going to make its way from the first moment we saw it, when, in September 2020, it made its debut on Rai2 in general silence, on the sly, without adequate promotion. The word-of-mouth effect, that inexhaustible reservoir of streaming treasure that it is RaiPlay and most importantly, the definitive passage on Netflix have managed to convince the audience of the power and sincerity of a 100% Italian series succeeded in the impossible: bringing the very young back to generalist television to get passionate about the events and dramas consumed inside a juvenile prison overlooking the sea, a perimeter of souls forced to live together for a limited period of time and forced to make a choice : to ally or to war, join forces or succumb to the destructive pull of the herd. This is the principle from which Sea Outfiction co-produced by Rai Fiction and Picomedia, born from an idea by Cristiana Farina and written together with Maurizio Careddu, has chosen to start, and it is from this same principle that it has chosen to continue in this third and eagerly awaited new season , available from 1 February on RaiPlay with the first six episodes and free-to-air on Rai2 from Wednesday 15 Februaryimmediately after the Sanremo Festival.

The question that has flashed through the heads of fans of the series in recent months is simple: what will he invent Sea Out 3 to keep the audience’s attention now that the balance inside the prison has jumped and the war between the Ricci and the Di Salvos is at its peak? We of Vanity Fair we saw the first two episodes in preview, and we can say that the type of register and story used have changed a bit compared to those of the last few seasons. Together with a warmer and more accurate photography, fine-tuned with great skill by Francesca Amitrano, directed by Ivan Silvestrini chooses to look to the past by taking timid steps towards the present. Indeed, it is no coincidence that Sea Outside 3 start from a flashback with one of the protagonists who most knew how to shape the series at its inception: Ciro Ricci, interpreted by the great Giacomo Giorgio, a character who continues to hover in the series partly because we know how much the public is fond of Giorgio and partly because it is clear that no one until now has managed to represent a villain tout court as credible and ruthless as him. The first scene, we said, is a sort of passing of the baton between Ciro and Rosa (Maria Esposito, write down this name because we will hear about it): Sea Outside 2 it had, in fact, concluded with Rosa’s entry into prison, with the intention of avenging her brother’s death by killing Carmine (Massimiliano Caiazzo, getting better and better), accused of having murdered Ciro even if the real culprit was Philip (Nicolas Maupas).

Carmine, for his part, now that Filippo and Naditza (Valentina Romani) are fugitives, live in prison with a certain sense of resignation and expectation: his job, right now, seems to be just to watch his back in order to continue being the father of the little girl he had from Nina (Greta Esposito) waiting, sooner or later, to receive some sign of life from his best friends, who ran away to live their dream of love even though we know that, soon or later, the free ride will end for them. While Carmine understands how to move and, above all, how to protect himself from Rosa’s vengeful fury, Filippo and Naditza continue to savor the escape by living their relationship carefree – during the first episode there is a red light scene that will surely make Chiattillo fans blush – keeping in mind, however, what they have left behind, i.e. a prison in which – after the conviction of Totò (Antonio Orefice, very good) – disharmony reigns both because the director brilliantly played by Carolina Crescentini and the commander played by Carmine Recano they are kept under control after the escape of the boys and both because it is now clear that no one is safe anymore.

Edward (Matthew Paulillo) tries as best he can to move his pawns to honor the legacy left to him by Ciro but, now that Pirucchio (Nicolò Galasso) no longer seems to be on his side, things are more complicated for him. The arrival of Rosa, however, gives him the opportunity to study a plan to kill Carmine who, for his part, can still count on the precious help of Pino (the unattainable Artem)now very close to his Kubra (Kyshan Wilson) – the most tender scene of the first episode of Sea Out 3 is theirs -, and on the support of a still indecipherable figure like that of Mimmo (Alessandro Orrei), who between the sides of the Riccis and that of the Di Salvos is certainly the mad variable from which it will be necessary to expect anything. Among other things, while Viola (Serena De Ferrari) continues with her games and her provocations, also noteworthy is the terror that flows in the eyes of Cardiotrap (Domenico Cuomo) now that he is guilty of murdering the violent boy who made Gemma’s (Serena Codato) life hell. In the first two episodes of Sea Outside 3 there is action – watch out for the first scene of the second episode -, love, but also mystery, because at this point in the story it will be very interesting to understand which direction the writers will take. Several new entries will arrive such as Lucrezia Guidone and some adult realities will consolidate such as that of Beppe (Vincenzo Ferrari) and his relationship with Kubra’s mother, but the truth is that it will be at this point that Sea Out he will have to prove that he hasn’t lost his polish by giving the public a few more twists.

The ingredients for the success of the operation are all there: beyond the skill of the young protagonists – our heart beats above all for Maupas, Romani, Caiazzo, Artem, Giorgio and Paolillo, who we also hosted on stage at the last edition of Vanity Fair Stories -, to be on the side of Sea Out are also the numbers: 6.7 million viewers in the first two seasons; 21 million hours of time spent and, this time, the addition on RaiPlay of a mini-format entitled Sea Outside #Confessions, sort mockumentary during which the protagonists of the series tell without filters the most intense moments lived on the set. «Sea Out is on air in about 25 countries and we are having conversations in Europe for possible adaptations,” said the producer Robert Sessa of Picomedia during the press conference to present the series. «We have something special in hand, a solid concept, a story that can have several seasons: it just depends on us». And, in the meantime, we can anticipate that the writing team led by Cristiana Farina is already working on a fourth season. Time will tell.
