The state of Maranhão has been heavily affected by the rains since December last year. According to Major Lisboa, spokesman for the Maranhão Fire Department, currently there are 6 cities in a state of emergency.
Mirador, Grajaú, Barra do Corda, Jatobá, Paraibano and Formosa de Serra Negra are the municipalities that demand more attention from firefighters at this time.
In an interview with CNN Radio, the Major assessed that the rainy season started early. “They came earlier, we have more intense storms, usually in early March, but in December 2022 we can already see the damage.”
The spokesperson stressed that, at the moment, “monitoring work is being carried out together with the responsible bodies and with meteorology.”
The forecast is that the rains will continue in Maranhão in the coming days.
Major Lisboa also stated that the priority “is to get people who are in areas with the possibility of flooding to a safe place.”
“In parallel, we provide humanitarian aid, with basic food baskets, medicines, transport for testing covid, it is important to bring hope”, he added.
