Maradona’s heirs passed the rights to his name

The heirs of Diego Maradona will henceforth be the ones who have the right to use for commercial purposes the name of the Argentine superstar who passed away these days three years ago.

A decision of the General European Court based in Luxembourg, vindicates the heirs, against the company Sattvica which managed the rights based on an agreement that Diego had made with his lawyer since 2008.

However, his heirs went to court and were vindicated as the decision focuses, among other things, on the fact that: “The documents presented by the company do not justify the creation of a trademark. In addition, Maradona died before the relevant application was filed, therefore Sattvica was unable to correct the deficiencies presented.”

Thus, the European Patent Commission (EUIPO) is asked to reject the relevant application that has been in its offices since 2015, when Sattvica requested the right to use the trademark. It may, however, to appeal to the Supreme Court of the EU to appeal the decision.
