“Many horror movies in one,” says director about “Until Dawn”

Adaptation of famous video game game, the movie “Until Dawn” debut in theaters this Thursday (24). In an exclusive interview with CNN David F. Sanberg (“Annabelle 2”), defined production as “Many horror movies in one.”

“Until Dawn” is a video game game released in 2015 in which players bump into a survival narrative amid an environment surrounded by elements of terror. All the choices made by the player can have other consequences later in history.

Throughout the game, which takes place at dawn, difficult decisions are posed on ethical and moral dilemmas. These choices can change the course of history and generate different plots with each play.

Game characters may have different destinations depending on the player’s decision, which also implies different ways of dying. This aspect will be passed to the movie which, according to director, is Different from the game with new characters, but which serves as a “Expansion” of history .

In the movie, Sanberg plays with the concept of “Time Loop”, a concept that brings a scenario where a certain period of time repeats continually, as if stuck in a cycle. A similar production that illustrates the technique is “Death gives you congratulations” (2017).

Such a resource allowed the director to explore different ways to kill his characters and thus bring varied premises of the terror genre to innovate and continue scaring and terrorizing the public.

“Before making ‘Until Dawn’ I thought about what would be a perfect horror project. Would it be Slasher? Or supernatural?” CNN .

“Making this movie was like a dream that came true because in the end I was able to put all these different horror genres in a movie that is full of monsters, blood, practical effects, makeup, with elements of a gore and slasher, with also the supernatural,” he added. “It’s a big mix.”

About the challenges of adapting the popular story among fans, the professional emphasized that he had a job, along with the writers,, even changing a little of the story, to maintain the essence. “They have managed to capture that feeling of play with this kind of fresh start and a limited number of lives, you know, before each of the characters die.”

“But it was a challenge to do this because each character had to have about 90 sets of clothing, because they are always wearing the same thing in the movie, but they needed to be bloody and the next minute, whole and impeccable again. Then they needed to get wet and dirty and then integers again. It was difficult, but that’s what I loved in the movie, the fact that we could reach this place,” he said.

“Until Dawn” is starring the actors Maia Mitchell, Belmont Cameli, Peter Stormare, Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-Young Yoo and Odessa A’zizion .
