Manhattan Project documents signed by Oppenheimer go up for auction

One [1945report signed by 24 participants of the Manhattan Project which produced the first nuclear weapons, will be auctioned this Thursday (14) . The cover of the document is named after J. Robert Oppenheimer known as the “father of the atomic bomb”.

Released on August 12, 1945 to the press, days after the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagazaki , the record has a preface dated July 1 of the same year. The document was written before the “Trinity Experiment”, the first nuclear weapon test in history.

Officially titled “Atomic Bombs: A General Account of the Development of Methods of Using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes Under the Auspices of the Government of the United States, 1940-1945,” better known as the “Smyth Report,” the document has detailed technical and administrative development atomic weapon . The nickname comes from the author, Henry Smyth, an American physicist and diplomat.

On the cover are the signatures of J. Robert Oppenheimer , Enrico Fermi, Ernest Lawrence, James Chadwick, Harold Urey, Isidor I. Rabi, among others. They all participated in the project developed by the United States to make the first atomic bombs in history. These diverse professionals were mobilized around this enterprise between 1942 and 1947.

The auction will take place this Thursday (14) and offers can be made until the day before on the website RR Auction. Until the publication of this article, bids had already exceeded US$ 35 thousand, approximately R$ 174 thousand.

The Manhattan Project and the life of Robert Oppenheimer are the themes of the film, which won 6 Oscars: “Best Film”, “Best Actor”, “Best Director”, “Best Supporting Actor”, “Best Editing”, “Best Cinematography” and “ Best Original Soundtrack.”
