The Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) confirmed the First case of measles in the state capital in 2025 . The victim is a 31 -year -old man who had received full doses from childhood disease vaccine. The information was released on Thursday (17).
According to SMS, the patient recently traveled to Jacarezinho, Paraná, and the first symptoms – fever, red spots on his body and cough – appeared on April 2.
Despite the infection, the history of vaccination contributed to the evolution of the clinical condition to be milder, allowing the recovery in home isolation and without the need for hospitalization.
The origin of the infection is being investigated, considering the patient’s displacement to the state of Paraná. During the period of transmissibility, the man remained isolated at his residence and, so far, no other related cases have been identified.
Given the confirmation, the Municipal Health Secretariat adopted control measures, including vaccination block in the patient’s residence region and at the hospital where he received care. In addition, follow the active search actions for possible new cases in the area and the monitoring of identified nearby contacts.
Measles
According to the Municipal Health Secretariat, measles is a highly contagious acute viral disease, transmitted by respiratory secretions through droplets expelled by cough or sneezing, and also by air. Transmission can occur up to six days before the spots on the skin and for up to four days after its appearance. Symptoms usually manifest between 7 and 18 days after contact with an infected person.
The first signs of the disease include high fever, malaise, runny nose, conjunctivitis, cough and lack of appetite. In some cases, white spots (Koplik) may appear inside the cheeks. The character characteristic red spots begin behind the ears and spread all over their body, tending to decrease after about three days.
The Municipal Health Secretariat stresses that the measles vaccine is the main form of prevention and is available for the entire population from 1 year of age to those born from 1960.
Immunizant SCR, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, reached significant vaccine coverage by 2024, exceeding 95% both in the first and second dose.
Vaccination is offered at Basic Health Units (UBSS) from Monday to Friday, from 7am to 7pm, and on Saturdays and holidays in the integrated AMAS/UBSS at the same time. The population is oriented to look for the reference UBS to verify that the measles vaccination scheme is complete.
