Man who kept woman in prison and tortured her for 48 hours is charged

The man who kept his ex-partner imprisoned and tortured her for 48 hours was charged by the Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry for the crimes of attempted qualified femicide and false imprisonment. He is in preventive custody.

According to the complaint, on March 4 of this year, Wallace Ribeiro Gonçalves, known as Chorão, broke into the victim's residence during the early hours of the morning and began a session of violence against the woman, after the couple's relationship ended.

Still according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, Wallace struck several blows with a piece of wood and then with a hammer against the head, face, body and hands of the victim, who was gagged and tied to a chair and was only able to flee the scene because, in a While the accused was absent, a cousin arrived, untied her and took her to the hospital.

In an excerpt from the request for preventive detention, the prosecutor classifies the crime as “heinous, a hate crime, which denotes the height of misogyny against a woman, whose statistics have been increasing significantly in an alarming manner throughout the world and notably in the state of Rio de Janeiro , as evidenced in the Dossier Mulher 2023, to demand effective repression”.

Violence against women

According to the study, released by the Public Security Institute (ISP) of Rio, per hour, 14 women were victims of violence in the state, in 2022. Furthermore, according to the survey, more than 125 thousand women were victims of domestic and family violence in Rio. In this type of violence, the perpetrators of the crimes were partners or ex-partners of these women.

They are also the main perpetrators (80.2%) of feminicide cases. In 2022, 111 women were victims of femicide in Rio. Of these, 70 had already been victims of some type of violence.
