A father who was pictured holding his 15-year-old daughter’s hand under rubble from the Kahramanmaras earthquake this week said she died in the moment of the quake with no chance of escape.
speaking to CNN on Saturday, Mesut Hancer said he lost other family members in the earthquake, including his mother, two older brothers and a sister-in-law.
Hancer said he was able to reach his daughter three days after the earthquake. She was visiting her paternal grandmother in Kahramanmaras.
“It was really bad. I went there as soon as I found out. I tried alone, with my hands, to pull my daughter, but unfortunately I couldn’t rescue her”, Hancer told the CNN .
He said his daughter’s body above the waist was out of the rubble, but the rest was under the rubble.
Authorities were unable to bring a construction lift to help get the body out, and a man helped him dig up his daughter’s body.
Hancer also told CNN who is currently homeless due to damage that has occurred to her home.
