Man arrested for threatening mayor of Pernambuco city with knife

A 26-year-old man was arrested after threatening the mayor of Trindade, Sertão de Pernambuco, Helbinha Rodrigues (União Brasil) with a knife. The incident occurred on Sunday (1), during a campaign event for the city’s current mayor and candidate for reelection.

According to the Civil Police of Pernambuco (PCPE), the threat occurred in a commercial establishment in the region. In a statement, the PCPE reported that the suspect was arrested in flagrante delicto and sent to a custody hearing, remaining at the disposal of justice.

Attempted murder

The mayor of Sertânia, in the Sertão region of Pernambuco, Ângelo Ferreira (PSB), 70 years old, was stabbed by a political opponent on Thursday (29).

According to the politician’s advisors, the mayor was in downtown Sertânia when he was attacked. In a video posted on social media, he says he underwent surgery and is recovering well. The suspect remains at large.

After the incident, the Governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra (PSDB), spoke out on social media and informed that the case is already being investigated by the Secretariat of Social Defense of Pernambuco.

“I have just heard about the attack on the mayor of Sertânia, Ângelo Ferreira. I am closely monitoring his health and praying for his recovery. The Department of Social Defense is already working on the case with a determination for a rigorous investigation,” he said.
