Mali’s acting president Oumar Traore’s chief of staff and three others were killed in an ambush, the government said in a statement.
The ambush took place in rural Nara, in the Koulikoro region of southwest Mali, the statement said, without providing further details on when the attack took place or who was responsible for it. One other person, a driver traveling with the delegation, is missing, he added.
Mali is one of several West African countries battling a violent Islamist insurgency that has spread from its arid north over the past decade.
Militants linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State have seized swaths of territory across the region, killing thousands and displacing millions.
Frustration with the authorities’ failure to quell the violence has spurred two military coups in Mali since 2020.
