Mali: The military regime passed a new election law

His new election law Mali voted for the military regime that took power in a coup in August 2020, taking a small step towards the restoration of democracy, amid the harsh economic sanctions imposed on the country by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (ECOWAS).

Mali and the 15-member ECOWAS are arguing over the timeline proposed by the coup leaders for holding elections, initially proposing five and then two years, as ECOWAS demands their acceleration.

The Mali junta issued a decree on June 6, setting a two-year timetable for March 2022while negotiations with ECOWAS continue.

The West African Economic and Monetary Union has expressed regret over the decision and said it would continue to work with the military government to achieve a “mutually agreed timetable”.

The leaders of the ECOWAS member states will reconsider the issue at a summit expected by 3 July.
