The military junta in power in Mali today demanded that France withdraw its troops from the country without delay and under the supervision of the Mali authorities, a junta spokesman said.
Col. Abdullaye Maiga said the decision announced yesterday, Thursday, by France and its European allies to withdraw their forces from the West African country was a unilateral move that violates military agreements between Mali and France.
“In light of the repeated breaches of the defense agreements, the government is calling on the French authorities to withdraw Barkhan and Takouba forces from the national territory under the supervision of the Mali authorities without delay,” Maiga told state television.
Relations between France and its former colony have deteriorated in recent weeks after the junta withdrew from an agreement to hold elections in February and offered to stay in power until 2025.
Announcing the troop withdrawal yesterday, President Emmanuel Macron said it would be completed in four to six months.
