Maldives prohibit Israel’s passports in protest against war in Gaza

The Maldives banned the entry of Israeli passport patients in their territory, the president said on Wednesday (16), accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza War, the allegation that the country has repeatedly denied.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu ratified an amendment to the country’s immigration law after his approval by Parliament on Tuesday (15), according to a statement from his office.

The amendment introduces a new disposition to the immigration law, expressly prohibiting the entry of visitor with Israeli passport in the Maldives, he added.

“Ratification reflects the firm position of the government in response to the continuous atrocities and acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people,” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry of Israel and the country’s consulate in Colombo did not respond to requests for comments.

Israel has consistently rejected any accusation of genocide, stating that it respects international law and has the right to defend itself after the Hamas Transfronho Attack from Gaza on October 7, 2023, which triggered the war.

South Africa filed a lawsuit against the UN International Court of Justice, and Amnesty International accused her of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza in a report last December, accusations she denied.

Muizzu, from the Maldives, initially requested the prohibition of Israeli passport patients in June 2024, following a recommendation from the Office, which led the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel to recommend that its citizens avoid the archipelago famous for their immaculate beaches and luxurious resorts.

Tourism is one of the main engines of the Maldives economy, accounting for about 21% of its GDP and generating revenue of $ 5.6 billion by 2024, according to government data.

The island nation expects a revenue of about $ 5 billion this year.
