Maduro summons ambassadors to Caracas and Amorim meets with observers and opponents

President Nicolás Maduro summoned ambassadors in Caracas for a meeting on Saturday afternoon (27), on the eve of the presidential elections scheduled for tomorrow. Ambassador Glivânia Maria de Oliveira is participating in the meeting.

The information was confirmed to the CNN by members of the Brazilian government, who did not give details, however, about the reason for the summons.

Also this Saturday, the presidential advisor for international affairs, Celso Amorim, met with Gerardo Blyde, head of the opposition’s negotiators with the Venezuelan government for the signing of the Barbados Agreement, at the end of last year.

The document stipulated requirements for political guarantees for the presidential election, following negotiations that were mediated by Norway and facilitated by countries such as Brazil.

Amorim also met with members of the Carter Center, an organization for the promotion of democracy founded by former US President Jimmy Carter, which has followed several electoral processes in Venezuela and is an observer of this Sunday’s election.

Shortly after arriving in Caracas early in the evening of Friday (26), Amorim met with the Venezuelan Chancellor, Yván Gil. The meeting was described to the CNN such as “fast” and “protocol”.

At the meeting, Amorim spoke to the Venezuelan foreign minister about the “importance of the democratic process” and of Venezuela for Brazil and the region. Amorim also conveyed to Maduro’s foreign minister his hope that “everything goes as smoothly as possible.”

According to the Venezuelan minister, during the meeting, both men discussed the “relevance of the election” and the organization of the process by the National Electoral Council (CNE). “During a cordial meeting, we discussed the importance of this election and the peaceful atmosphere that exists in Venezuela,” he wrote on the social network X.

In his description of the meeting, the Venezuelan foreign minister described the electoral organization as “impeccable” and the local process as “one of the most transparent and secure in the world.” According to him, the “great challenges of transmitting truthful information based on absolute respect for Venezuelan legislation” were also discussed.
