Already on Brazilian soil to end his tour with a grandiose show in Copacabana there is no doubt that Madonna is the queen of pop, but the singer also ventured as actress and even director a few times throughout his career.
Madonna has appeared in dozens of films and directed two feature films although it was not as successful in cinema as in music.
With ups and downs, the singer has already taken home a Golden Globe for Best Actress, but has also won some Golden Raspberry awards — an award that chooses the worst in Hollywood — over the decades.
Discover the films in which Madonna acted
Madonna has featured prominently on the soundtracks of countless films, but her first significant role as an actress was in the feature film “Susan Desperately Wanted” from 1985.
In the plot, Roberta Glass (Rosanna Arquette), a bored housewife, becomes obsessed with ads in the classifieds of someone who is “desperately looking for Susan”. However, Susan (Madonna) is a criminal, and Roberta starts to face problems when she is mistaken for her.
After her debut as a protagonist, however, the singer's next two films proved to be a disappointment to audiences and critics.
Both in “Shanghai surprise” (1986) — in which Madonna plays an American who goes to China in search of opium — and in “Who is this girl?” (1987) — with her playing an innocent young woman accused of having participated in a crime — Madonna won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.
She also starred in “Sweet Innocence” from 1989, as dancer Hortense Hathaway, at a New Year's party full of artists.
And he returned to the big screen in 1990 to “Dick Tracy” as Breathless Mahoney, a seductive nightclub singer who tries to win over police detective Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty), as he wages battle against gangster Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino).
In the 1990s, Madonna appeared in a handful of films — “Fog and Shadows” (1991), “A Very Special Team” (1992), “Body in Evidence” (1993), “Serpent Eyes” (1993), “Big hotel” (1995) –, including the musical documentary “In Bed with Madonna” released in 1991, which accompanied his 1990 tour, the “Blond Ambition World Tour”.
However, it was in “Prevents” , from 1996, in which the artist played the biggest role of her career as an actress. The musical tells the story of Eva Perón (Madonna), first lady of Argentina between the 1940s and 1950s.
For her leading role in the film, Madonna won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
After that, in the 2000s, Madonna returned to theaters in the romantic comedy “Left For You” in which Abbie lives, a woman who decides to have a child with her gay best friend to fulfill her dream of being a mother.
She even starred in the film “Unusual Destination” (2002) — which earned her a new Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress — and made a small appearance in “007 – Die Another Day” (2003).
Films directed by Madonna
In 2008, Madonna decided to take a turn in her film career as director of the film “Dirty and Wise” , which portrays the lives of AK (Eugene Hutz), a Ukrainian gypsy who dreams of fame, Holly (Holly Weston), a stripper, and Juliette (Vicky McClure), an assistant at a pharmacy from whom she often steals medicine. The three help each other survive in London while dreaming of a better life.
Her debut as a director, however, did not please critics, and the film was poorly reviewed.
The singer returned to film directing in “WE – The Romance of the Century”, from 2011. The film portrays two parallel stories: the romance between King Edward VIII (James d'Arcy) and the divorced American Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) in 1936; and the life of Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a woman who becomes obsessed with the love story between the two after reading several of Wallis' letters in 1998.
