The newly elected French President Emanuel Macron had a telephone conversation with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where he stressed that France’s military and humanitarian support to Ukraine will be strengthened, according to a statement from the French presidency, Reuters reports.
While the Ukrainian president thanked Macron for “large-scale missions of military equipment contributing to the Ukrainian resistance”, the French president “noted that this support will continue to be strengthened, as well as the humanitarian aid provided by France”, according to the announcement by Elize.
“The mission of French experts assisting in the collection of evidence against impunity and allowing international justice work on crimes committed in the context of Russian aggression will be extended,” it said.
The United States, France, the Czech Republic and other allies have provided Kyiv with hundreds of long-range artillery pieces to help Ukraine repel the Moscow attack. Paris has already announced that it will send 40 km long Caesar cannons and Britain Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles and armor.
According to a statement issued by the Elysee today, Paris has so far sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine amounting to “more than 615 tonnes of equipment, including medical equipment, generators for hospitals, food aid, accommodation and emergency vehicles”.
Macron insisted on “his desire to work actively during his second term to restore Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, always maintaining close coordination with its European partners and allies.” He also said “France’s readiness to contribute to an agreement that provides security guarantees to Ukraine”.
The French president expressed to Volodymyr Zelensky his “concern” after the Russian bombing of Kyiv on Thursday, as well as “the unbearable situation in Mariupol, despite his repeated calls to the Russian president to respect the president.”
US President Joe Biden last Thursday called on Congress to release another $ 33 billion for Ukraine, of which $ 20 billion will go to military aid, $ 8.5 billion will go to the Ukrainian government as direct financial assistance, and the remaining 3 billion as humanitarian and food aid.
