Macron to discuss Ukraine crisis with Biden and Putin on separate calls

French President Emmanuel Macron will make phone calls with US Presidents Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the next 24 hours to discuss the crisis in Ukraine and has not ruled out traveling to Moscow.

The announcement was made on Wednesday (2), before addressing the European Union’s interior ministers in Tourcoing, northern France.

Macron said finding a negotiated way to ease tensions was a priority, even as the US authorized the deployment of 3,000 troops to Poland and Romania, while Russia mustered troops near Ukraine.

Depending on “the progress in our discussions in the coming hours”, Macron said he does not rule out traveling to Russia.

Russia has gathered tens of thousands of troops near its border with Ukraine but has denied plans to invade the nation.

France has also offered to send troops to Romania under the leadership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to help protect Eastern Europe from a possible fallout from the crisis.
