President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) officially recognized, this Tuesday (5), two indigenous territories, granting them legal protection as reserves to defend against invasions by illegal loggers, miners and cattle ranchers.
The announcement comes on the day that Brazil celebrates the Amazon region, which is home to the world’s largest rainforest, and whose preservation is seen as essential to absorb the carbon emissions responsible for global warming.
Lula signed the decrees officializing the indigenous lands of Rio Gregório, in Acre, and Acapuri de Cima, in Amazonas, in a ceremony at the Planalto Palace to mark Amazon Day.
The president also signed a decree that changes the rules on land regularization in areas belonging to the Union and the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra).
Lula also signed two decrees dealing with conservation units (UC) in Roraima, which will also act as “pressure reducers” on Yanomami territory.
