President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) had a bilateral meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, this Saturday (9).
According to Palácio do Planalto, Lula congratulated Erdogan on his victory in the May elections and stated that he wants to deepen the coordination of positions with Turkey in international forums, in addition to reactivating the strategic partnership between the two countries, especially in the area of Defense.
In 2022, trade between Brazil and Turkey reached a record US$4.9 billion (around R$24.5 billion), reported Planalto.
War in Ukraine
As Planalto said, Lula praised the Turkish government’s efforts to mediate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The PT member emphasized that Brazil is ready to contribute “any real proposal for dialogue” in addition to guaranteeing Brazil’s support for the resumption of the grain agreement between the countries at war.
Brazilian presidency at the G20
The Brazilian government declared that Lula anticipated to Erdogan that Brazil will emphasize social inclusion and the fight against hunger, poverty and inequality while it holds the presidency of the G20.
For Lula, the group cannot focus its discussions solely on the war between Russia and Ukraine, because there are other crises in the world, such as hunger, extreme poverty and climate challenges.
Partnership in civil aviation
Lula signaled his willingness to facilitate discussions between Embraer and Turkish Airlines – Turkey’s main airline – in the context of potential new acquisitions planned by the Turkish company.
Earthquake in Türkiye
The Brazilian president lamented the strong earthquake that caused around 50,000 deaths in Turkey and Syria in February. At the time, the Brazilian government sent a team of experts to help with the search for survivors.
