Lula greets the pope for defending peace in Ukraine and invites him to visit Brazil

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke with Pope Francis by phone this Wednesday (31). Lula published a message on Twitter about the meeting with the pontiff.

“I congratulated the Pope on his efforts in defending peace in Ukraine and fighting poverty. I thanked the gestures in defense of democracy in our country in recent years. We should have an audience at the Vatican in the coming months and I have invited the Holy Father to visit Brazil”, said the president.

The last pope visit to Brazil will be 10 years old in July. In the country, the pontiff participated in the ceremonies of the World Youth Day, which brought together thousands of people in the city of Rio de Janeiro. On the occasion, Francis was also in the basilica of Aparecida, the patron saint of the country.

Lula and the pope were together for the last time in February 2020 at the Vatican.

In an interview with Argentine TV, at the end of March this year, Francis again stated that the Brazilian president was convicted and arrested in 2018, without concrete evidence.

The pontiff considered the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff, in 2016, to be unfair, whom he called an “excellent woman”.
